Inuit, Innu, and the Mi’kmaq Peoples are the Nations that inhabit what is currently referred to as Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). The Schools Act (1997) recognizes English as the language of instruction and also provides instruction in French for those with rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Act also recognizes the rights of Labrador Inuit contained within the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement Act. Under section 43 of this Act, a private school may be set up with permission of the Minister, reporting to the province and adhering to the regulations contained within the Schools Act. There are no policies specifically protecting or enhancing Indigenous languages in Newfoundland and Labrador.
