Prince Edward Island (PE)

There are two Mi’kmaq First Nations, Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations, in the lands now referred to as Prince Edward Island (PE). There are currently no provincial acts related to Indigenous languages. Provincial language policy focuses on the status of French and English. The French Language Services Act (2013) ensures the provision of services from every provincial government institution in French or English to support the Acadian and Francophone community. The Education Act discusses French and English schooling but does not mention Indigenous languages.

The Mi’kmaq, Prince Edward Island, and Canada Framework Agreement (2019) includes includes the subject of Mi’kmaq heritage, language and culture. The agreement does not provide further information pertaining to these negotiations, or what First Nations wish to achieve (McIvor et al., 2022). The agreement does not constitute a commitment by any party to reach an agreement or to provide benefits in respect of any subject matter listed.
